69/365 Finger Food

Baby A tried his first finger food today...good 'ole Cheerios. While he could get them to his mouth pretty easily, he was not interested in eating them and would spit them out.  I think he ate 2, which I put in his mouth.  This first time he wasn't a big fan.

I don't know what my deal was, but I had a super hard time nailing focus on Baby A on these.  Probably I was shooting too wide and too close, but even at 2.8 I had a hard time.  And, I was shooting 1/125sec, which is higher than I do often (if the light's just not there I often shoot at 1/100 or even 1/80)  The back eye was consistently soft..grr.  Maybe it was just one of those days.  He is always harder to get sharp focus than D, though.

  1. This is adorable and I'm glad you got a shot of his first Cheerio, that's a big moment!!! ;) The focus is a tiny bit soft, but I don't think I'd have noticed if you hadn't mentioned it, or I hadn't really studied the photo intently. I do have something on this. When I took Mastering Manual from CM's last month, someone asked about how to really nail focus, especially on faces. One of our instructors said start shooting around f/3.5 at the widest. Get really good at that f/, then stop down to the next f/ and get good at that, and work your way down. She said by starting a bit less wide, and working down you'll get a ton of practice at it and that's what it takes. (I def. need to work on this too!!)

  2. So sweet! I love this stage of life. getting perfect focus is hard for me as well.

  3. Oh my goodness, what a darling baby! Have you played around with your Auto Focus settings? I'm still figuring things out but it seems like when I have it in AF-C mode (I shoot with a Nikon camera, not sure if it's the same on others) I get a better focus.

    1. Is AF-C where the AF is continuous? I shoot Canon, but yes, I do use the continuous auto focus mode...and back button focusing, which helps too. I think my issue is just I need to practice, and perhaps close down more. I do try to shoot pretty wide open often. Thanks for the suggestion, though!
